About

I’m Jos, and this is my online portfolio. I’m an illustrator, humanitarian, and life-long student. After graduating with a first class BA (hons.) in Illustration in the summer of 2006 I almost immediately fled the country, eventually starting work as an ad hoc exhibition designer working in museums in Sweden and North East England. I found life among the dead unsettling and returned to full time education in 2009 to study Disaster Management and Sustainable Development, which I passed with distinction, and since 2011 I’ve pursued a career in humanitarian supply chain. In that time I’ve worked in the Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kenya, Liberia, Rwanda, South Sudan, Syria, Turkey, and the UK. I’m now working towards a PhD part time and working as Head of Procurement at a small non-profit.

Humanitarian supply chain is a stressful job, and I use this blog as a creative outlet. In my portfolio you’ll find:

  • Ink: All the second and third year work I completed as part of my illustration degree between 2002 and 2006, commissioned artwork, and personal drawings.
  • Iron: Over the past few years I’ve dipped my toe into some traditional crafts – learning how to blacksmith and some woodwork.
  • Lead: By far the most common blog entry will be painted miniatures, whether they’re plastic, pewter, or classic ’80s lead.
  • I’ve also included some of the exhibitions I designed and built (or helped build).

Physically, resembling a viking, a bear, or a viking bear, I hold a brown belt in judo and played rugby for one of the best teams in Jordan, before retiring from both due to injury.  I enjoy hiking and swimming, pub quizzes, anything related to sci-fi and fantasy, retro video games, horror movies, and ten-pin bowling. I’m a Member of the UK’s Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply, and Humanitarian Logistics Association, and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and Royal Society for Public Health. In what little remains of my free time I continue to draw and paint as a hobby and very occasionally, by commission.
